In 1968, Peace Corps alumnus David Schickele recruited his pal Paul Eyam Nzie Okpokam to feature in a lighthearted comedy about a Nigerian intellectual's escapades in San Francisco. The film, crafted in a docu-fiction style similar to Cassavetes' Shadows, keenly examines the peculiarities of late 1960s African-American culture through the lens of an outsider. It vividly captures the racial dynamics of the era, from interracial relationships to cultural misunderstandings and the exuberance of the counterculture. The narrative takes a documentary turn when the director's voice unexpectedly interjects, revealing the distressing fate of its protagonist: Okpokam, wrongly accused of a crime, faced imprisonment and was ultimately forced to leave the country.
